Ricardo Tavares has devoted his life to the coffee industry, following in the footsteps of his father. His father started in the roasted coffee industry, delivering products to meet the demands of Brazil’s domestic coffee consumption. At 19, Ricardo embarked on his own coffee journey when he accompanied his father on a trip to northern Brazil. Upon returning from the coffee fields, he decided to pursue a career in the purchase and sale of coffee beans in Minas Gerais, abandoning his former profession as an economist.
After years of hard work, Ricardo’s dream of owning and operating coffee farms came true with the acquisition of Fazenda Primavera. The 980-hectare farm has become a regional exemplar of specialty coffee production in Brazil, built by Ricardo and his team from the ground up. They transformed traditional coffee production by Portuguese families who arrived in the late ’70s when coffee production in the region began.
Fazenda Primavera is situated in Angelândia, Minas Gerais, a region at the transition between biomes, with land and vegetation characteristic of both the Atlantic forest and the Cerrado. The farm’s elevation, between 1000 to 1050 meters above sea level, allows for the cultivation of specialty coffee. The climate is also favorable, with average temperatures ranging between 20 to 24°C annually and precipitation of 1,000 to 1,300 mm.
The farm is equipped with state-of-the-art installations, including a 24,000 m² drying patio, 14 electric dryers, and equipment for processing Natural, Pulped Natural, Honey, and fully Washed coffees. The farm primarily cultivates Red and Yellow Catuai and has added new varieties such as Topazio and Geisha. Notably, Pulped Natural Geisha from Primavera won first place at the 2018 Cup of Excellence.
Ricardo and his team are committed to social and environmental sustainability. The farm’s production techniques aim to minimize environmental damage, with a power plant that recycles water used in depulping to produce energy and the coffee pulp composted for use as natural fertilizer. The team conducts outreach to neighboring farmers to share knowledge and best practices through Instituto Café Solidario, helping to move the region of Angelândia and Chapada de Minas forward. Fazenda Primavera’s sustainability practices earned them the title of the 3rd Most Sustainable Farm in Brazil. Learn more about their practices in the link below.
